1916.9.18 Name and identification of character The mask may be identified as a high official in the Vädda king's retinue, possibly a vädda minister, vädi ämatiya (Sin.). Context This character appears in the later performances of the Maname Kathava (Sin.). Material Wood, vel-kaduru (Nux vomica). Iconography The crown is in the shape of a dagäba (Sin.), a relic dome; a dome in two rims and an outer decorative border flanking it. Unlike in the case of the Vädda king no teeth are shown. Normal curved whiskers of a king are drawn in black. The ear-blades are small, ending in a flower design. The left part is broken. Comments on the Umlauff Catalogue The Umlauff catalogue identifies it as Waddi Aematiya. It is presumably a miss spelling of Vädi ämatiya. 18 02 2000 Dr. M. H.
