1916.9.116 Name and identification of character A village headman or chieftain, aracci (Sin.). Context Stage one in a Kolam performance (vide Preface). Material Wood, vel-kaduru (Sin.) (Nux vomica). Iconography The dimensions of the mask and the basic facial pigmentation display a stylised naturalism. The iconographical details represent a village official of a lower rank. The sideburns are small compared to those of a mudaliyar (a higher ranking village official). The sharp nose, the yellow face, the cork-screw moustache, the tightened lips and the sharp eyes convey an expression of authority. Comments on the Umlauff Catalogue The expression ¿Kutta Kolan (zwerg)¿ is used numerous times in the catalogue to identify masks. The German word Zwerg means dwarf, its Sinhala expression is kuda. None of the masks identified as depicting ¿Kutta Kolan (Zwerg)¿ in the catalogue are representative of dwarfs. These are masks worn by village officials. The Sinhala words Kuda and käta have a close pronunciation. The mask carvers use the word käta to designate some masks of a smaller variety, although the masks identified as ¿Kutta Kolan¿ in the catalogue do not belong to this category. 2000 07 11 Dr. M. H.
