Context A mask used in a solo dance performed in stage two in a Kolam performance. Material Wood, vel-kaduru (Sin.) (Nux vomica). Iconography An ornate mask displaying exquisite craftsmanship. It is carved out of one piece of wood. The head-dress consists of a frame containing an anthropomorphic figure, a standing deity. The main face of the mask, which is fitted to the face of the dancer, presents naturalistic features of a comely maiden. It is glossily painted in yellow and appears to have been given a coating of the traditional balsamic oil called dorana tel (Sin.). The forehead band, nalal patiya (Sin.), is broad and ornamented with traditional designs such as petal motifs, pala-peti (Sin.), and lines. It is in the shape of a porch and forms one continuous composition with the flower-shaped ear-discs. The small nose, the eyes and the mouth display traits of a handsome dancing girl. The upper frame is in the shape of a rectangular portico. The figure standing in the centre displays qualities of both a male and a female deity. There are some features of the mask which heighten the liveliness of the figure. The two hands are stretched upwards with the palms indicating a gesture, hasta-mudra (Sin.), which means serenity and wishing for a long life. The lines of the palms are painted in detail, which is indicative of the ornamented palms of a dancer. Moreover, the bracelets, necklace and the long draperies are also suggestive of female dancer or a guardian deity of dancing females. 2000 07 19 Dr. M. H.
