Mask, nani kolan. Sri Lanka Ceylon Långt, spetsigt djurhuvud av rödbrun färg, utan öron. Längd: 23 cm. Bredd: 15 cm. [ocr] 1916.9.181 Name and identification of character A jackal or a fox, nariya (Sin.). Context An animal character in the story of king Maname, Maname Khatava (Sin.) (Vide Preface). Material Wood, vel-kaduru (Sin.) (Nux vomica). Iconography A hollowed animal mask consisting of a long snout. The face is reddish brown. The mouth is closed. The representation of the animal is stylised, e.g. the eyes are decorative. These are semi-circular with a decorative border. Whiskers have been delicately painted. There is a deep cut slot underneath the lower part of the snout. It is very likely that this slot serves the purpose of fixing the mask to a pole. There are no ears. Comments on the Umlauff Catalogue The term ¿nariya¿ has wrongly been transliterated as ¿nani¿, which is phonetically incorrect. 2000 05 17 Dr. M. H.
