Sri Lanka Ceylon 1916.9.100 Name and identification of character The drummer, alias the tom-tom-beater, Anabera Kolama (Sin.) or Panikkale (Sin.). Context A character in the episode of the drummer and his family in Kolam (vide Preface). Material Wood, Vel-kaduru (Nux vomica). Iconography The turban of a drummer, with two edges of the tightly worn turban jutting out (the left edge is missing). The side-whiskers stop at the cheeks near the edge of the ears. The face is yellow. Two rows of teeth are visible, but the colour has faded. Ears with slots to fit earrings. Comments on the Umlauff Catalogue The mask is described in the Umlauff Catalogue as ¿Roda Kolan¿. Even if ¿Roda¿ is a misspelling of Rodiya (Sin.), there are no stories in Kolam connected to this ethnic group. 2000 06 13 Dr. M. H.
