Kaiser Mahal was constructed in 1885 for Jit Shumsher under the direction of Kishor Narshingh. In 1908, it was sold to Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher, who later gave it to his son General Kaiser Shumsher J.B. Rana. An avid reader, Kaiser Shumsher had a wonderful collection of books on all subjects. In 1968, his widowed wife donated his collection to the government at his request, which still houses at the same building, now the Kaiser Library.
