The steps leading to Swayambhu Mahachaitya. Swayambhu, the Self-Created or Self-Existent, is one of the most venerated and sacred Buddhist sites. Set on a hillock, west of Kathmandu City, it is reputedly the oldest settlement in the Kathmandu valley.
