Glossary for addressing the LGBTQIA+ community

20 Aug 2022

This glossary was published as a gazette by the Tamil Nadu government on August 20, 2022. It contains the Tamil equivalent of frequently used English terms relating to gender and sexuality. The translations of the terms are accompanied by short descriptions in both languages. It was collated after a recommendation by the Madras High Court in December 2021.  The first version of the glossary was submitted to the Madras High court in February 2022. It was prepared without consulting the members of the queer community. In response, various queer-led organisations in Chennai such as Queer Chennai Chronicles and Orinam along with The News Minute circulated an updated glossary. The Tamil Nadu government adopted most of the terms suggested and published this updated glossary in August 2022.  The 32 terms mentioned in the glossary have been divided into five sections: terms related to sex, terms related to gender, terms related to sexuality, umbrella/collective terms and other community terms.  The following are a few of the terms and their descriptions along with their Tamil translations as they appear in the glossary:  Sex: Sex refers to the biological makeup of a person, based on external or internal body parts, hormones, sex chromosomes, etc. Intersex: Intersex people have innate sex characteristics that do not fit medical and social norms for female or male bodies. These can include external or internal reproductive parts, chromosome patterns, and/or hormonal patterns...
