The Grand Trunk Road or today's National Highway No 1 is the life line of India connecting Calcutta in the East to Amritsar in North .Before Partition ,it ran upto Peshawar, now in Pakistan. This road is very ancient beginning from the dawn of History. Punjab, being the gateway of India, this road in Punjab area was metalled by the British between 1849 to 1866. It proved very useful to the British during 1857 to crush the Indian mutiny as all the Military stations were linked to this road. A Telepgraph line was also laid along with it. It gives a detailed description of all the important landmarks on this road in the pre-1947 Punjab
