I hope the holding of the Conferences in an Asian country will lead to the growth of well-organised statistical systems which would be of considerable value in building up a sound basis for the economic and social advancement of the peoples of Asia and of the world. [...] A special feature of the work of the Institute is the close integration of research training and the application of statistical methods to a wide range of problems such as the survey of agricultural crops studies of rainfall and floods and social and economic enquiries of all kinds. [...] The attention of the Government of India is naturally turning more and more to the formulation of an economic plan and programme In spite of its many preoccupations the Government of India have therefore steadily kept in view the need of strengthening the statistical services and developing an articulated and organized system of statistics in India. [...] India sent official delegations to the 24th biennial session of the International Statistical Institute and the World Statistical Congress in Washington in 1947 and also to the Berne session of the International Statistical Institute in 1949 as well as to the meetings of the Intenational Association for Research in Income & Wealth and some of the sessions of the International Union for the Sci [...] India fully recognizes the need of international standards in the fields of statistics and the importance and advantages of continuing international contacts in improving the statistical surveys of the country and in increasing the international comparability of statistical informtion.
