I have therefore decided to discuss today how the proper understanding of the geography of India can help in formulating an economic programme for the development of the fisheries of the country. [...] To achieve our objective of improving the nutrition of the people the development of fisheries must be undertaken against the background of local preferences prejudices and resources. [...] For instance the prosperity of the Chilka Lake a source of iniportant commercial fisheries will depend on its connetion with the sea in the east and the supply of fresh water it may receive from the Mahanadi in the north. There are upwellings of the bottom water towards the surface in the Arabian Sea which replenish nutrient salts along the Western Coast particulary in the north.:12 GEOGRAPHICAL BASIS OF FISHERIES OF INDIA 5.
