THE EASTERN ECONOMIST 315 The Private Member LAST Friday was the second-day on which the last twu-and-a-halhours of the sitting of the House of the People was set apart for the transaction of private members' business under the amended Rules of Procedure of the House. [...] The private member has thus secured wider opportunities instead of the limited time available before when the allotment of time for the purpose lay in the discretion of the Speaker. [...] The costant demands by the supporters of the Hindu Code Bill for its revival by the Government in spite of the latter's embarrassments reveals to some extent the helplessness of the individual member of Parliament. [...] Finally we might point to the vast building activity and the renovation of millions of households—(though less conspicuous to the outside world)—which as one of the biggest sources of absorbing labour has improved the prospect in the employment markets. [...] The Committee was appointed in 1947 under the chairmanship of Sir Raymond Evershed (now Master of the Rolls) to inquire into the practice and procedure of the Supreme Court and to consider what reforms should be introduced for the purpose of reducing the cost of litigation and securing greater efficiency in the dispatch of business.
