Another apparently insignificant but really impotant development in recent months has been the growth of the idea that the Corporation.which was announced simultaneously with communique on the conclusion of the Commonwealth Economic Conference should promote the development of the backward countries of the sterling area. [...] The importance of the elections is due to the fact that the successful canddates have to elect members of the regional assemblies who in turn have to elect the members of the National Assembly. [...] The United States which is thining of the cost of the heavy subsidies to the farmer when agreement prices are far below the market prices cannot fail to take account of the inability of the iporting countries to subsidise food so heavily. [...] REVIEW OF PROVIDENT FUND SCHEME The progress of implementation of the Employees' Provident Fund Scheme is reported to be one of the important subjects on the agenda of the first meeting of the Central Board of Trustees beginning in New Delhi on Thursday February 5. The Employees' Prvident Fund Act of 1952 now applies to workers eployed in six major industries viz. [...] The progressive improvement in the exportable rice surplus has been a factor of considerable stability and its strength in the years to come seems assured in the context of the general shortage of this staple cereal in the countries of South-East Asia.
