The workings in the Hatnol seam and the portion of the workings in the Santoria seam in the neighbourhood of the shafts are shown on Plan A and the codition of the workings in the Hatnol seam after the explosion is shown on Plan B. It will be seen from the plans that the workings in the Hatnol seam consisted of a dip gallery driven down from No. [...] The ventilation of the Hatnol seam split from the main ventilation at the landing in the shaft passed down the dip gallery and left the seam by the drift. [...] All that was done was that on the Sunday which was the day before the explosion the European assistant took down brattice cloth and erected it at the mouth of the west level with a view of forcing the air into the mouth of the level. [...] One of the hauling ropes was torn off the drum and the three tubs at the bottom of the drift which were attached to the rope were blown across the Sanctoria main levee.' The hand fan was blown six feet from the air pipes laid in the west level. [...] The whole range of air pipes collapsed inwards and flattened out as the result of the partial vacuum due to the condensation of the steam in the afterdamp and the rapid cooling of the gases which had been burnt within them.
