The Fairwork ratings provide an independent perspective on labour conditions of platform work for policymakers, platform companies, workers, and consumers. Our goal is to show that better, and fairer, jobs are possible in the platform economy. [...] Irrespective of their employment classification, workers should have the right to organise in collective bodies, and platforms should be prepared to cooperate and negotiate with them. [...] The rationale for a return to the CoSS definition is on the grounds that platforms do not exercise any “degree of control, commitment and accountability” over independent contractors i.e. [...] Therefore, this right to reject work appears to be a redundant proposal.”22 However, the claim that platforms do not exercise control over platform workers ignores evidence to the contrary, as workers’ time, and by extension, their earnings, are increasingly subject to tighter controls.
